Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) are designed to manage surface water where it falls by slowing, storing, filtering and reusing rainfall before it enters the drainage network. Rather than moving water away as quickly as possible, SuDS work with natural processes to reduce flood risk, improve water quality and create healthier, more resilient urban environments. They can be integrated into streets, public spaces and developments to deliver long-term environmental and social benefits alongside effective drainage.

Surface water runoff is rainwater that flows over the ground instead of soaking naturally into the soil. In urban environments, impermeable surfaces such as roads, pavements and roofs prevent water from infiltrating, causing it to flow rapidly into drainage systems. During heavy rainfall, this can overwhelm conventional drainage infrastructure and increase the risk of surface water flooding.
As towns and cities become more heavily developed, increasing areas of impermeable surfacing generate greater volumes of surface water runoff.
